Sit and Go Strategy

Six Player S&G Strategy

Generally sit and go tournaments on sites like www.FullTiltPoker.net are played with nine players with the top three players making money, but there are also other variations out there throughout online poker rooms. One of those other variations is a six player tournament where the top two players make money. You have the same odds of making money, but the tournament is a lot faster paced then a nine player sit and go tournament and you’re going to need to make sure that your strategy changes accordingly.

In a six player sit and go tournament the action is fast and the blinds roll through very quickly which means you have less time to wait for a big hand. With the blinds coming around the table so quickly you’re going to need to open your hand selection up a bit and play more marginal hands then you normally would in a nine player tournament. You need to consider that your opponents will also be playing marginal hands and sometimes a weak ace is a strong hand when dealing with six players.

You won’t see as many big pocket pairs or premium starting hands and if you find that you normally wait for premium hands when playing nine player tournaments then six player tournaments might not work out for you. In a nine player tournament on any Poker.net site, you can sometimes squeak into third place by playing tightly, but in a six player tournament it’s nearly impossible to play tight and make the top two. Throughout the tournament you’re going to need to win at least one all-in to stand a chance of finishing in the top two places or at least win a few big pots.

Patient players usually don’t turn out to be profitable players in six player tournaments and it’s usually the aggressive player who does the best over the long run. In the beginning of the tournament you should be looking to see as many flops as possible for cheap and try hitting a hand. Most players use this same strategy so it’s typical to see players making loose calls in the tournament until one or two players are eliminated.

Once two players are out of the tournament and it’s done to only four of you left the action tends to tighten up a bit until two players both get premium hands which is when you’ll see fireworks happen on the poker table. If you manage to double up in the early stages of a six player sit and go tournament then you’ll be able to take advantage of playing more tightly than your opponents. Being able to sit there and wait for a hand is a great advantage to have and you should make sure you benefit from your chip lead. You should be able to steal a lot of blinds with the chip lead because no one is going to call you unless they have a premium hand in which case they’ll most likely re-raise you and you can just fold your hand unless you think you have them beat.

Six player sit and go tournaments on Ultimate Bet.com are very quick with fierce non-stop action and great for the adrenalin junky looking for some excitement online. I play these tournaments quite often and actually like the fact that they end so quickly and there isn’t a lot of sitting around.
